Age 28 - The 1850 Census shows Nicholas and Martha living in Barbour Co., West Virginia.

[According to Vernon Wilson, Nicolas and Martha moved to Iowa because of their interest in the abolition of slavery]

Age 38 - The 1860 Census shows Nicholas and Martha living in Squaw Twp., Warren Co., Iowa.

Age 48 - The 1870 Census shows the couple living in Liberty Twp. Clarke County, Iowa.

Age 58 - The 1880 Census shows them living in Squaw, Warren County, Iowa

Age 78 - The 1900 Census, Nicholas and Martha state they had 9 children with six still alive

Obituary - Nicholas E. Stickel
Nicholas Edward Stickel, son of George and Sarah Stickel was born in Lowdan County, Virginia, July 21, 1822, and died in New Virginia, Iowa, September 19, 1922, at the age of 100 years, 1 month and 29 days.

In his youth the family moved to Barber County, West Virginia.

On October 8, 1846, he was united in marriage to Martha Ann Proudfoot, of Taylors Drain, West Virginia. In 1854 they moved to Iowa, where he has since resided. He united with the Methodist Episcopal church when he was a boy and was an active member of the church as long as his health permitted. He was one of the charter members of the church which organized at Mt. Tabor.

Residence History: In Autumn of 1854 a group of West Virginians took a wagon train to Iowa. The group included Nick and his wife and 3 children. Upon arriving in Iowa they formed the town of New Virginia, Warren Co., Iowa. Nick and his family lived there for 60 years. At the time of his death he was believe to be the oldest person in the county.

He was a living example of the religion of his belief, always having a pleasant and cheerful word for all whom he met. He has maintained the family alter all of his life, having prayer with his family every morning and evening.

During his last sickness he was always cheerful, showing the same patience as the Christ which his life so much exemplified.

October 8, 1806, he and his wife celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. His companion departed this life Nov. 1, 1901. Eliza and John departed this life in infancy and Mrs. Sarah Braucht departed March 17, 1899.

He leaves in bereavement two sons and four daughters, namely, Elias and Miss Cyrene, of New Virginia, Edward of Ft. Dodge, Mrs. Harriett McGee of Indianola, and Mrs. Catherine Green and Mrs. Cora Bolyard of Des Moines. Thirty-one grand children, sixty four great-grand children, one great-great-grand child and a host of other relatives and friends.

Grandpa was a favorite of us all and we all dearly loved him. We all feel that he has gone to his reward in heaven.

Funeral services were conducte from the Methodist church in New Virginia, Iowa, Friday, September 22d at 2 p.m. by a former pastor, Rev. C. K. Corkill now of Menlow, Iowa, after which he was laid to rest in the New Virginia cemetery.
