William Sumpter was a great nephew of the famous Revolutionary war General "Thomas Sumter". Thomas had the famous "Fort Sumter" named in his honor. The fort was located in Charleston, North Carolina's harbor and during the outbreak of the Cival War became famous for the first battle of the War. Wikipedia Entry for General Thomas.
