Comments: An article in the Clark Times Courier dated July 8, 1937 indicates that Lonnie "Red" Stickles was cut by an undentified Negro at a Carnival in Front Royal, Virginia. A fight ensued while Lonnie and his friend William Underwood were pitching baseballs at a concession stand. A group of 5 negros attempted to crowd their way into the game. Lonnie asked the group to move back until they finished their game and when they refused Lonnie knocked one of them to the ground. One of the men slashed at William with a knife and missed William and instead cut Lonnie accross the lower abdomen. Lonnie was rushed to Winchester Memorial hospital and later died from his wounds.
The grave marker (see picture link above) indicates a last name spelled "Stickels" but other documents show that he spelled his last name as "Stickles".
