Obituary

The son of Harley and Daisy Stickell, he was born in Elba Township, Knox County, Illinois, on September 25, 1916.

After twice returning to work on the family farm during the Depression years, he graduated from the University of Illinois in 1940 and the Law School in 1942.

As a new naval lieutenant, he took charge of a just-completed minesweeper at Boothbay Harbor, Maine. Living with his wife, Julia, he trained up and down the mid-Atlantic states. Then, following the ground war, he served off North Africa, Italy, and southern France, before ending service in the Philippines. These experiences added to his natural curiosity and a certain restlessness. He practiced law in Illinois from the 1940s to the 1960s, was an early developer in the Cape Canaveral area of Florida, worked in the steel industry of northern Indiana in the 1980s, and settled in Fort Wayne to be closer to his youngest grandchildren. Not given to retirement, he made many area friends in his work in real estate, insurance, and as a Blue Cross senior advisor. A year ago, he lost his beloved wife of 66 years.

He is survived by two sons, Larry (Kim) of Roanoke and Doug of Maquon, Illinois. He deeply loved his 9 granddaughters, Steffanie (deceased), Rebekah (deceased), Hedley, Susan, Danielle, Caroline, Madeleine, Hilary, Sophie, and great grandson Sacha.

Fr. Dan Leeuw will conduct a funeral service for the immediate family at 10:30 AM on Wednesday in the chapel of Sacred Heart Home.

Burial in Gilson Cemetery, Gilson, Illinois.
