Comments: BRIDGEPORT — John F. Stickel, 84, of Clarksburg, passed away on Wednesday, February 18, 2015, at his residence. He was born May 7, 1930, in New Milton in Doddridge County, a son of the late Herman S. Stickel, Sr., and Mamie L. Stickel. He is survived by his loving wife, Linda S. Tyler Stickel. Linda was not only his loving wife, but his best friend.

He is also survived by one sister, Virginia L. Nicholson of West Union; one brother, Wilbur Neil Stickel and his wife Cretta of Bridgeport; many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, along with one special niece, Vickie Trippett.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Herman S. Stickel, II.

He grew up in Doddridge County, attended a one-room school during the first through eighth grades and went on to attend Doddridge County High School, where he graduated.

John was a veteran of the Korean War, joining the Air Force right after high school and serving honorably until November 2, 1955. After the Korean War, he went on to attend Potomac State College and received an associate degree in Chemical Engineering. He was also a brother in Sigma Phi Nu. After attending Potomac State, he enrolled in Fairmont State College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and a minor in Social Studies. John then entered the workforce, serving as a Court Investigator and Probation Officer for judges in Harrison and Doddridge counties during a 28-year tenure; he worked for 11 different judges.

During the 1970s, he taught criminal justice classes at Fairmont State College.

He was an avid sportsman, and he enjoyed hunting deer and turkey. He traveled to Quebec, Canada, for 19 years to fish for walleye and northern pike, and he enjoyed fishing with the people who traveled with him.

John never met a stranger or failed to help a friend or neighbor if he could help make their life better. He was a jokester and liked to make people laugh, following the old saying that if you make people laugh, they are happy. John will be sadly missed by friends and people who knew him as a true friend and neighbor. John said many times, that out of all his world travels and accomplishments, his great joy was when he was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on June 20, 1980.
