Comments: Jim Lock's Genealogy Database states the following "He apparently went by his middle name because a lot of his children's obituaries say daughter of Howard Locke. His grand-daughter (who is now deceased) said that Joshua and Matilda were married in the middle of the Harper's Ferry bridge that washed away in the 1930's. Maryland claims the Potomac River so that is why they were married in Maryland. Joshua and Matilda's marriage certificate is #285 at the Washington county court house in Maryland. The certificate reads Joshua H Locke and Matilda Mercer were married April 8, 1858. Also, in the 1850 census for Jefferson County, in the 28th district, enumerated on the 28th day of August 1850, it shows Joshua H Locke, age 17, in the household of his parents John and Ann Locke." 1860 census - Joshua is 27 years old, Matilda is 21 and Ida L. is 2. The 1880 Census - (Battletown, Clarke Co., VA) - Howard Lock (45 yrs), Matilda wife (43 yrs), Ida daughter is 21 yrs and is working as a servant, John W. (son) is 19 yrs and is working as a laborer, Sarah H. daughter is 18 years, Charles H. son is 15 years, Dal.
