Comments: Benjamin Peyton Ashby was born 30 April 1810 in Clarke County, Virginia. This information comes from the Bible which was his and his daughter's. His parents were reputedly named Peyton (Dayton) Ashby and Elsie Corder. This information has not been verified. He was married to Mary Ann Keller on 29 January 1840 in Frederick County, Virginia, with bond being provided by Jacob Keller, presumably Mary Ann Keller's father. The marriage is recorded in the Clerk's office of the Circuit Court in Frederick County in the Marriage Register Book No. 1, page 8, line 12.

By 1844, Benjamin and Mary Ann were living in St. Charles County, Missouri. There, their daughter, Catherine Elizabeth Ashby was born on 30 January 1844. Mary Ann Keller Ashby died there 5 November 1844. She is buried in Craig Cemetery in Defiance, St. Charles County, Missouri. She was 19 years old at the time of her death.

Benjamin Ashby can be found in three Federal Census records in St. Charles County, Missouri. In 1850, he is listed in Femme Osage Township, on p. 138. He is 40 years old, his daughter Catherine is 7, and living with them is "Alsinda Gold" aged 60. He is a farmer. Living nearby are the Parkerson Craig family and the Isaac McCormick family. In 1860, he is still in Femme Osage Township, is 50 years old, his daughter is now 16, and "Eliese Gold", aged 73, is living with them. Daniel Klein, aged 23, a farm laborer is also enumerated with the family. Living nearby are still the Craigs, but also John Gold and his family. In 1870, Benjamin Ashby is listed in Femme Osage Township, Schluersburg Post Office, is 60 years old, his daughter is now 26 and married to Francis Louis Fluesmeier, and they are living with B.P. Benjamin Ashby died 8 May 1880, and is buried in Craig Cemetery. ---- [Mary Hennegan (McMillan)]

The Ashby Book shows that Benjamin Peyton as the son of John Ashby and Sarah Ashby but according to Mary McMillan's extensive research this connection is incorrect.
